The Ash tree is Ireland’s tallest and most common native tree, known for its strength and resilience. This deciduous tree can regrow after being cut down, symbolizing renewal and endurance. The wood is prized for its flexibility and durability, traditionally used in making hurleys.
Sacred to our ancestors, the Ash was believed to hold protective powers. This particular Ash wood comes from Claregalway (Baile Chláir), a small village just outside Galway City. Named for the River Clare that flows through it, Claregalway is steeped in history—home to Claregalway Castle, once the stronghold of the Clanricard family, and the Claregalway Friary, founded in 1250 by Anglo-Norman knight John de Cogan.
