The Connemara Pony herd has become a cherished part of life at Kylemore Abbey. Since their arrival in 2019, these gentle, inquisitive animals have captured the hearts of staff, visitors, and especially the Benedictine Community, with Sr. Karol forming a unique bond with each member of the herd.
Often seen grazing peacefully beneath the Twelve Bens or roaming the fields near the Victorian Walled Garden, the ponies are a living link between Kylemore’s heritage and its present-day story. Their calm presence and quiet beauty embody the spirit of Connemara itself—resilient, nurturing, and deeply connected to the land.
This enduring presence is captured with warmth and detail by local artist and Kylemore alum Gemma Coyne, whose watercolour brings the ponies to life as part of the Characters of Kylemore collection.
