The Ash tree is Ireland’s tallest and most common native tree. Known for its resilience, it can re-sprout and grow again after being cut down. The wood is famous for its strength and flexibility, often used in making hurleys.
Historically, the Ash tree was sacred to the Irish, believed to hold protective powers. This particular Ash wood comes from Claregalway (Baile Chláir), a small village just outside Galway City. Named after the River Clare, which flows through it, Claregalway is home to the ancient Claregalway Castle, once the fortress of the powerful Clanricard family. The Claregalway Friary, founded in 1250 by Anglo-Norman knight John de Cogan, stands as a reminder of the area’s rich history.
