Jam is a much-loved staple in Irish homes- whether enjoyed with a slice of Irish soda bread, complimenting freshly made scones, or perhaps providing the perfect filling for a sponge cake, it is a necessity in many Irish pantries. At Kylemore Abbey, we carry on this heritage by producing our own line of delicious jams, zesty marmalades, and savoury chutneys in limited quantities to guarantee the best quality. While the garden was originally cared for by the Benedictine nuns, the garden no longer produces fruit on the same scale, but it continues to serve as an inspiration for our preserves.

A Tradition Revived
While jam production began at Kylemore with the Benedictine nuns, the process was briefly outsourced in the early 2000s. That changed in 2020, due to the pandemic causing the Abbey to close to visitors. Head Chef John O'Toole and the Kitchen Team revived a valued craft with care, skill, and appreciation for tradition, by brining jam-making home.
Featured Flavour: Strawberry Jam- Made with sweet, sun-ripened strawberries, this traditional preserve is a timeless favourite that goes well with scones or a Victoria sponge.
The Victorian Walled Garden- An Ongoing Inspiration
Today's garden is still the center of our jam story, even though it no longer produces all the fruit. Originally a source of plentiful produce for the nuns, the beauty of the garden still serves as inspiration for our small-batch products. Our collection's highlight product is the Blás na hÉireann award-winning Victorina Breakfast Marmalade, which was recognised for its vibrant flavour and traditional craftmanship.

From the Past, For the Future
It is believed that jam production dates back to the Stone Age, as a simple method of preserving nature's sweetness. It's more than that at Kylemore. Utilising the plentiful berries of the Victorian Walled Garden and estate was another example of the community's self-sustainability, which has been a key principle of the Benedictine ethos. Each jar reflects the self-sufficient way of life that has shaped Kylemore Abbey for generations.
